What Is LoRa?
LoRa (Long Range) is an advanced wireless communication technology designed for long-distance, low-power, and highly reliable data transmission. Unlike WiFi or Bluetooth, which struggle with range limitations and interference, LoRa is built to maintain stable communication across large homes, multi-unit buildings, and commercial properties, making it the ideal foundation for leak detection and smart protection systems.
1. Sensors Detect Water and Send a LoRa Signal
Floor sensors placed under the sink, beside the toilet, next to the washing machine, and the inline shutoff system all monitor for leaks.
The moment water is detected, each device sends a long-range LoRa signal that can travel through walls, floors, and mechanical rooms without relying on WiFi.
2. The LoRa Gateway Receives the Alert and Connects to the Cloud
All LoRa signals from the sensors are received by the Safehous Gateway.
The gateway then uses the home’s internet connection to securely forward the alert to the Safehous cloud platform, ensuring fast, reliable communication.
3. The Safehous App Sends Instant Notifications to the User
Once the cloud receives the alert, the Safehous app immediately notifies the user on their smartphone.
If equipped with an automatic shutoff valve, the system can also trigger an immediate closure of the water line to prevent damage.

Why Safehous Uses LoRa
Safehous is engineered for large scale properties such as condominiums and apartment complexes with hundreds of units, where reliability is non-negotiable. LoRa provides the coverage, battery life, and resilience required to deliver instant alerts and automated valve shutoff without depending on unstable WiFi networks.

Key Advantages of LoRa
1. Exceptional Long-Range Coverage
LoRa delivers communication distances up to a quarter mile indoors and significantly more outdoors. This ensures sensors can reach the Safehous Gateway even from remote areas of a property such as mechanical rooms, garages, attics, crawlspaces, or detached pool houses.
2. Superior Signal Penetration
Traditional wireless technologies weaken when passing through thick walls, concrete, metal enclosures, or multiple floors.
LoRa is engineered to maintain signal strength in these challenging environments, providing consistent device connectivity throughout the entire building.
3. Low Power Consumption for Long Battery Life
LoRa uses extremely low energy, allowing sensors to operate for years on a single battery. This reduces maintenance, prevents downtime, and ensures continuous leak protection without frequent service calls or battery swaps.
4. Scalable for Any Property Size
A single LoRa gateway can support hundreds of devices on the same network.
This makes Safehous ideal for:
-
Homes of any size
-
Luxury properties with multiple wings or floors
-
Multi-unit residential buildings
-
Commercial facilities
-
Campus-style environments
As your system grows, LoRa grows with you, without sacrificing performance.
5. Secure and Interference-Resistant
LoRa operates on encrypted communication protocols that safeguard every data packet sent from sensors to the Safehous platform. Because it uses low-frequency radio waves, LoRa is far less susceptible to interference from other electronics compared to WiFi or Bluetooth.
